Summer 2008 Trip

San Jose - Portland - Rockaway Beach

Background - My sister, 3 brothers and I have been planning a reunion for about a year. At first we were planning on meeting at our youngst brother's home in Kennewick Washington, but at his suggestion (Kennewick is as hot in July as Las Vegas, according to him) we rented three houses in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. The reunion was scheduled for July 20 - 27, and would be the first time, except for some family funerals and birthdays in many years that the five of us would be together at one time.

If there was a disappointment, it was that many of our descendants could only be there for the last Saturday and Sunday of the reunion, or not at all. We were also deeply disappointed that RoseMary and I couldn't get there until Thursday, July 24 due to complications in closing RoseMary's business.

The caravan - or how to haul 8 bikes and a car with a motorhome. RoseMary drove most of the trip.

The first leg of our trip was a visit to Laurel's and Justin's home in West Linn, Oregon where we spent part of the day and added our nearly 3 year-old grandson, Zeke, to our travelling group. We now numbered 8 - Zeke, Cassie (10), Kenny (11), Robbie (12), Alex (14), Ryan (16) and RoseMary and me. We would add one more, grandchild, Chantel (18), for the Yellowstone leg of the trip.

Then we took the 1-1/2 hour drive to Rockaway Beach, a bit north of Tillamook where we had rented the Jetty View house, so it would be big enough for all of our kids and grandkids. As it turned out, our son, Dennis, had the house to himself for almost the whole week. The other two houses were Falcon's Nest and Hideout.

Our house had an RV pad, but pulling our caravan made it difficult to maneuver onto it. To make matters worse, we had to cross a railroad track just before turning sharply to get to the pad. We blew out two tires on the car and caused havoc with our tow bar when the car missed the graded portion of the crossing. Tab for repairs so far is $300, and we still haven't got the tow bar completely fixed.

We didn't hit the water pipe, but it was tight quarters.

We finally got the chance to hit the beach for some fun. Our house, Jetty View, was immediately adjacent to some rocks. The other houses were next to sandy beaches, so we opted to meet at Hideout. It turns out that Friday was the one good day that they had all week long.

Of course we had to take pictures together. I have 30 or so shots, but I consider these to be the best:

We have a good time whenever we are together.

Of course we are all endowed with unusual gracefulness and we were always taught to come to the aid of a lady in distress.

Notice, "we've all got Daddy's nose". It seems to come through our Thornton ancestors!

They started us off with no glasses, but I've worn them since the second or third grade.

Randy had to leave early Saturday morning and Jeff left a little later. Jeff, LeGrande and Cheri did go with us for a short capes drive, but it was a foggy, drizzly Oregon coast morning. Going south from Tillamook we stopped at Cape Meares for a visit to the Octopus Tree and the Cape Meares lighthouse.

Then we continued on south to Oeanside. Oceanside has a beautiful beach with large haystacks and a huge rock face that comes right down to the ocean.

We finally gave up on the foggy drizzly day and returned to Tillamook for ice cream at the Tillamook dairy. The next day was Sunday. We spent the morning getting ready to leave and saying our last good-byes.

On to Yellowstone or Idaho and Utah
